The multitude of public voices from last fall calling for justice for the Rohingya have fallen silent. It's almost eight months later and the number of Rohingya who have fled Myanmar to escape atrocities committed by Myanmar's military has swelled to more than 700,000. Bangladesh is now the location of the largest refugee camp in the world with more than a million Rohingya living in squalid conditions. It is estimated that over 200,000 of them are at risk of death from monsoon rains and the subsequent flooding that will occur, and the cholera that is anticipated by the International Red Cross and other humanitarian agencies. Last fall it was estimated that over 70,000 women were pregnant as a result of gang rapes by Myanmar soldiers. If they survived their injuries, and were not able to secure abortions then there will be around 70,000 babies born in the coming weeks and there is no guarantee that those women who gave birth to these children will want to keep them given the circumstances under which they were conceived. There are also more than 40,000 children who are orphans because their parents and all adult members of their family were killed in the ethnic cleansing operations. There are those of us who are still fighting for justice for the Rohingya BUT OUR EFFORTS WILL ONLY SUCCEED IF THOSE WHO SIGNED THIS PETITION AND OTHERS WHO HAVE SPOKEN OUT ON BEHALF OF THE ROHINGYA TURN UP THE PRESSURE ON THE CANADIAN GOVERNMENT AND PRIME MINISTER JUSTIN TRUDEAU.
