Investigate UC Health's Billing Malpractices

Investigate UC Health's Billing Malpractices
The Issue
During our family visit to Colorado, my son experienced an asthmatic reaction, prompting us to rush him to the ER at UCHealth Broomfield. What followed was an ordeal that no parent should have to endure. We were sent a medical bill that lacked any itemization. Despite our repeated requests, what arrived in the mail next were aggressive demand letters instead of transparent billing records. After multiple attempts, we finally obtained an itemized bill only to discover it was incorrect and grossly inflated.
To our dismay, charges were more than 60% higher than what was indicated on the UCHealth website, totaling over $2,000 more than expected. Furthermore, there were discrepancies in the severity level of the ER visit and an incorrect number of inhalation treatments charged. These billing inaccuracies suggest a deeper, systemic issue within UCHealth that calls for urgent scrutiny.
Shockingly, stories like ours are not isolated incidents, as countless patients and families in Denver and across Colorado have faced similar predatory billing practices. These billing malpractices and unlawful customer service methods are unethical and exploitative, preying on vulnerable individuals during times of medical duress.
The Colorado Attorney General's office and the Federal Trade Commission must undertake a thorough investigation into the University of Colorado Health's billing practices. The objective is to ensure accountability and to implement corrective measures that protect consumers from unlawful charges and aggressive collection methods.
The investigation should focus on:
1. Enforcing accurate, itemized billing that aligns with advertised rates.
2. Examining systematic issues related to claims of inflated charges and incorrect billing categories.
3. Protecting consumers from misleading communication tactics and demand letters that are sent without prior transparency.
This petition seeks justice not just for my family, but for all affected by UCHealth’s practices. We urge you to sign this petition to demand accountability and fair treatment from healthcare providers. Your support is crucial in advocating for a healthcare system that serves patients with honesty and integrity. Sign this petition today and help make a difference in the lives of countless families.
