To the hotels and motels in Monmouth County
We know you are a business. We know you have "policies." But tonight, those policies are being used as a shield to turn away disabled families, veterans, and seniors during a Code Blue alert.
Since January 11th, federal executives have been enjoying a new pay raise. Meanwhile, today, we have 18 confirmed deaths from Storm Fern across this country. People are dying because they are being told "there’s no room" or "we don't take vouchers" or "no pets"—even when that "pet" is a documented service animal.
To the Hotel Managers:
When the shelters are at capacity and the state says the "emergency" is over, YOU are the last line of defense against the morgue. A vacant room is a wasted opportunity to save a life.
Our Question for You:
If a human being freezes to death on the sidewalk outside your lobby tonight because you refused a valid emergency voucher or turned away a service animal, was the "policy" worth a life?
We aren't asking for a handout. We are asking for Humanity. 1. Accept the emergency vouchers.
2. Honor the law regarding service animals.
3. Open your vestibules or lobbies as temporary warming spots when the wind chill hits sub-zero.
I have 80 signatures from neighbors who are watching how you treat the "least of these" during this storm. We will remember who opened their doors and who stayed silent.
