The Issue

For years, our once vibrant town of Hastings has been mired in constant roadworks carried out by Balfour Beatty and sanctioned by East Sussex County Council. The promise of improvements has turned into an endless cycle of disruption and inconvenience, leaving parts of our community severely impacted, isolated, and neglected. The heart of Hastings, with its bustling streets and local businesses, has become a ghost of its former self, as construction zones seem to pop up everywhere, yet yield little to no progress.

As a resident of Hastings, I witness daily the hardships these roadworks cause. Streets that should be alive with local activity are instead blocked, giving rise to long queues of cars and frustrated drivers. Pedestrians, including vulnerable groups such as mothers with prams, the elderly, and those with disabilities, are forced to navigate unsafe alternatives, risking their safety by stepping onto the roads. Such a scenario is unacceptable and dangerous, yet it has become the norm in our town.

We demand an immediate and thorough investigation into the actions of Balfour Beatty and the East Sussex County Council regarding these roadworks. Transparency is crucial to understand why projects seem to stagnate and what steps are being taken to ensure they are completed efficiently and effectively. We need accountability and answers—specifically, why improvements promised long ago have not been realized and why the licenses keep getting renewed without visible progress.

Hastings deserves better. By investigating this scandal, we can uncover whether decisions were made for convenience rather than necessity, and hold those responsible accountable for their actions. Furthermore, we want concrete plans and timelines for completion unveiled to the public, ensuring that this chaos is not extended indefinitely.

Please sign this petition to join the call for transparency, accountability, and, most importantly, justice for Hastings and its residents. Together, let’s urge the responsible entities to prioritize the needs and safety of our community over ongoing bureaucratic inefficiencies and failures.
