Investigate ongoing chemical odours from Cleanaway Sydney Olympic Park

The issue

Residents living near Sydney Olympic Park are experiencing persistent and unpleasant chemical odours believed to be originating from the Cleanaway waste treatment facility.

These odours occur on a recurring basis and are often described as strong, chemical or solvent-like in nature. At times, they are severe enough to prevent residents from opening windows, using outdoor spaces, or comfortably remaining in their homes. The issue is particularly concerning given the proximity of the facility to established residential neighbourhoods and Newington Public School.

Multiple complaints have been lodged with the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) regarding these odours. However, residents have not seen a meaningful or sustained improvement, nor have they received clear information about the source of the odours, the facility’s compliance with its environmental licence conditions, or the effectiveness of any mitigation measures.

Given that Cleanaway operates under an EPA licence in close proximity to homes and a primary school, residents are seeking reassurance that:

Licence conditions relating to odour and emissions are being strictly complied with

Appropriate monitoring and enforcement are being carried out

Community amenity and wellbeing are being adequately protected

We call on:

The NSW EPA to conduct a thorough and independent investigation into the source and cause of these odours

Increased and unannounced monitoring of the Cleanaway Sydney Olympic Park facility

Greater transparency regarding compliance, findings, and corrective actions

Our local MP to advocate on behalf of affected residents for stronger oversight and accountability

This petition represents the concerns of local residents who simply want a safe, liveable environment and appropriate regulation of industrial facilities operating near residential communities and schools.
