Investigate oil spillage in the river Kennet

The Issue

Over the past year, residents of Newtown, Reading, including myself, have witnessed a heartbreaking and ongoing environmental disaster. Used motor oil has been pouring out of the street rain pipe into the River Kennet at the bottom of Cholmeley Road. This spillage has contaminated the river, severely impacting the local wildlife, particularly the swans that grace our community with their presence.

As neighbours and environmental stewards, we have taken it upon ourselves to report the spillage and assist in rescuing and caring for over twenty swans affected by the oil. However, despite our efforts, this issue persists and remains unaddressed by the authorities in charge of protecting our environment.

The contamination of the River Kennet needs immediate attention. The Environment Agency and Thames Valley Police must investigate this issue thoroughly to identify the source of the pollution and hold the responsible parties accountable. It is crucial that measures are put in place to prevent further contamination and to protect the local ecosystem which is invaluable to our community and biodiversity.

According to accounts from Swan Support, a wildlife charity, the swans have faced challenges such as oil-covered feathers, which impacts their ability to stay warm and waterproof, rendering them unable to survive in the wild. This contamination not only threatens the swans but also affects the overall health of the river and its surrounding environment.

Residents of Newtown, Reading wish for a cleaner, safer river environment, and with the appropriate action by the authorities, this can be achieved. I urge everyone to support this cause and join me in calling for an urgent investigation and resolution to this environmental crisis.

Please sign this petition to demand prompt action from the Environment Agency, Thames Water and Thames Valley Police to halt the pollution of the River Kennet and protect our swans and local habitat. Together, we can make a difference and ensure a safer and cleaner environment for future generations.

I can confirm that D&N Autos, is NOT responsible for oil going into the river.
