Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has spent years warning Texans that election fraud is a serious crime. His office told voters as recently as February 2026 that "it is illegal to misrepresent your residence on election records." Now, a joint investigation by ProPublica and The Texas Tribune has found that Paxton himself may have done exactly that.

Paxton voted six times in the past two years while registered at a Collin County address where he no longer appears to live. He moved out of that home in June 2024, according to a divorce filing by his wife, state Senator Angela Paxton. Three election officials told the newsrooms that Paxton may have broken state law, which requires voters to be registered where they actually live.

Here is the problem with holding him accountable: any formal complaint about voter fraud in Texas gets referred to the attorney general's office. Paxton's office. A San Antonio election lawyer who previously led the voting rights program at the Texas Civil Rights Project told ProPublica that the right approach would be for the AG's office to bring in an independent special investigator.

Paxton is now the Republican nominee for U.S. Senate. He beat incumbent John Cornyn using votes that officials say may have been illegal. If Texas election law means anything, it has to apply to the people who enforce it.
