The Issue

Recent reporting by The New York Times has uncovered serious concerns about Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s leadership and competence in overseeing the Pentagon.

As the nation’s top defense official, Secretary Hegseth is responsible for maintaining military readiness, protecting classified information, and providing stable, effective leadership. But what’s happening under his watch paints a troubling picture.

According to officials, the Pentagon has been thrown into chaos under Hegseth’s management.

Three members of the team he brought with him into the Pentagon were accused last week of leaking unauthorized information and escorted from the building.

As NYT writes, the discord, according to current and former defense officials, includes: "screaming matches in his inner office among aides; a growing distrust of the thousands of military and civilian personnel who staff the building; and bureaucratic logjams that have slowed down progress on some of President Trump’s key priorities, such as an “Iron Dome for America” missile-defense shield".  Longstanding national security strategies are reportedly in limbo.

The officials spoke to NYT on the condition of anonymity.

The situation worsens with reports that Hegseth has shared classified information about U.S. airstrikes in unsecured communications via Signal at least twice with people who lacked proper security clearance, including his own family members. It is just one part of a broader pattern of mismanagement and questionable judgment.

Former officials say Hegseth has prioritized loyalty to former President Trump over experience or qualifications, leading to a climate of fear and dysfunction. Morale among both civilian and uniformed staff has plummeted. He is also accused of ignoring professional military advice and bypassing standard procedures, raising questions about whether critical national defense decisions are being made responsibly.

We call on Congress and the Department of Defense Office of Inspector General to launch a full investigation into Secretary Pete Hegseth’s management of the Pentagon, his conduct and competency to lead such important for our country organization.

Take all necessary actions to restore professionalism, stability, and effective leadership at the Department of Defense

Our military and national security demand steady, capable, and responsible leadership. We cannot allow chaos and politicization to jeopardize our safety at home and abroad.
