The Issue

Four years ago, my brother Carlos tragically took his own life after a devastating experience with our local hospital's handling of psychiatric emergencies. Shortly before he passed, he visited the emergency room, actively seeking help for severe psychiatric distress and suicidal ideation. Sadly, instead of being admitted or provided with resources, he was dismissed and discharged due to a lack of resources, psychiatric beds, and specialized nursing staff. The system failed him, resulting in an unimaginable loss for our family.

Carlos' story, unfortunately, is not unique. Across Canada, psychiatric emergencies are often inadequately addressed due to systemic issues. The lack of psychiatric beds, proper training for staff, and sufficient resources to properly handle and treat individuals in crisis is a nationwide concern. According to the Canadian Mental Health Association, only 7% of Canada’s health budget is allocated to mental health, despite representing around 10% of the healthcare burden. This discrepancy is leaving many individuals without the lifesaving care they desperately need.

The Canadian Institute for Health Information highlights that emergency departments are often the first point of care for individuals facing mental health crises. However, these departments are frequently unequipped to handle these situations, leading to those in need being turned away or inadequately treated. Such experiences can have fatal consequences, as exemplified by my brother's tragic story.

We need a comprehensive investigation into how psychiatric emergencies are handled across Canadian hospitals. It's crucial to identify and address the gaps, ensuring that no other family has to endure the pain of losing a loved one to a system that should have protected them. By understanding these failures, we can advocate for changes that allocate more resources and training to emergency rooms, ensure availability of psychiatric beds, and increase public awareness of mental health issues and their handling.

I am calling on the Canadian government and health authorities to prioritize mental health care by increasing funding and resources for mental health services, particularly within emergency departments. By addressing these systemic issues, we can prevent avoidable tragedies and save lives.

Please sign this petition to demand action and accountability in our healthcare system. Together, we can push for the necessary changes to ensure that those in psychiatric distress receive the care they need and deserve. Your signature can help spark the change to prevent future tragedies.
