The Issue

For nearly a decade, the Foundation for Liberty and American Greatness, known as FLAG, has raised millions of dollars in the name of civics education for American schoolchildren. A ProPublica investigation published in July 2026 found almost no evidence the organization was spending that money on students or classrooms.

What FLAG did spend money on was its founder. In 2024, Nick Adams and his mother, Angelika Adamopoulos, together received $587,279 from FLAG, more than half the organization's annual revenue, according to federal tax filings. For eight consecutive years, FLAG answered no when the IRS asked whether officer compensation had been independently reviewed. A nonprofit law professor at the University of Pittsburgh and former IRS official told ProPublica the absence of that review could itself constitute an "excess benefit transaction" under federal law.

FLAG also ran a direct-mail sweepstakes campaign offering donors a chance to win $1,000,000. Nine years of federal tax filings show no payment consistent with a million-dollar prize. At its financial peak, FLAG held roughly $512,000 in assets, about half the prize it had been advertising to donors. "If the promise is that someone will win $1,000,000 and no one ever does, that's fraud," Lloyd Mayer, a nonprofit law professor at Notre Dame, told ProPublica.

At least one donor, a retired senior citizen, filed a Better Business Bureau complaint after the sweepstakes deadline was postponed multiple times.

Despite this record, President Trump appointed Adams to a State Department position in March 2026.

Sign this petition to demand the IRS audit FLAG and investigate its tax-exempt status, the Florida Attorney General investigate the sweepstakes operation for charity fraud, and Congress review how Adams was granted a federal appointment while running this organization.
