Investigate and Reform Distros: Our Electricity is nothing to write home about

The Issue

All customers have a right to safe and reliable electricity supply.

This is no2 of the NERC consumer rights and obligations.

But throughout Nigeria (except areas where top EDC or TCN officials stay), electricity has been so bad that to enjoy 4 hours of stable electricity in a day has become a luxury. There has been no light in Owode, Ibadan where I write this from, for about 36 hours. And that's just icing on the cake.

And the Government keeps on distributing the same electricity that is poorly supplied to our own people to people in Chad, Niger, Ghana etc. (with these countries owing a combined 40 billion naira in unpaid bills in 2019 alone)

But let's come back to the Elecrricity distribution companies. The EDCs are grossly inefficient, grossly mismanaged and corrupt.

The idea of the efficiency movement is that "spending money on an inefficient system will only result in more inefficiencies and wastage of resources". Increasing tariffs while electricity distribution is this bad will only worsen the situation.

This is to call on the NERC chairman, Prof. James Momoh., the minister of power, the TCN. If tariffs are to be increased, we want to enjoy Electricity. This is the primary responsibility of the NERC. What we want is: a panel to look into the practices of the EDCs and drive necessary reforms. Overall, electricity in Nigeria is nothing to write home about.
