A Petition by the South African Inclusive Economy Indaba (SAIEI)

South Africans are increasingly concerned about allegations of Rand manipulation and the widely circulated claims that the Rand’s supposed “true value” is R7 to the US Dollar. These assertions have created confusion, mistrust, and growing uncertainty about the integrity of our financial system.

A stable and transparent currency is crucial for food prices, fuel costs, interest rates, jobs, and everyday living. When questions arise about whether the Rand is being unfairly influenced or whether misinformation is being spread about its value the public deserves clear answers.

 
We are calling on the South African Competition Commission, National Treasury, SARB, and relevant regulators to:

1. Launch a full, independent investigation into: (1) Possible manipulation of the Rand by banks, traders, or other financial institutions. (2) The origin and credibility of the “R7 to the dollar” claims. (3) Any individuals or entities that may have misled the public or distorted market conditions
2. Publicly release all findings. including evidence, methods, and any recommendations or actions to be taken.
3. Strengthen oversight and enforcement, to protect the public from unlawful market practices and prevent future manipulation.
4. Improve communication with citizens, by providing clear, evidence-based information about the Rand and countering misinformation.

Why this matters

When the currency is manipulated or misrepresented, ordinary South Africans suffer through:

• Rising grocery and transport costs
• Higher interest rates
• Reduced investment and job opportunities
• A weakened economy

Every citizen deserves to know that our currency is protected from manipulation and that the information we receive about it is truthful, transparent, and accountable.
