Introduction of .Free, a One-Level Domain Name Free for Everyone

Introduction of .Free, a One-Level Domain Name Free for Everyone

The Issue

We, the undersigned, call on major domain registrars and the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to implement the introduction of a free .free domain, available to every individual, limited to one domain per person. This domain should be accessible to all, regardless of financial situation, empowering individuals, small businesses, and aspiring entrepreneurs to establish an online presence.

Why This Matters

In our increasingly connected world, having a domain name is essential for online visibility, personal branding, and the growth of small businesses. However, the cost of domain registration is a barrier for many people who would otherwise benefit from having their own website. According to a study by Verisign, 84% of small businesses in the United States with a website reported increased customer contact (Verisign, 2016). This statistic highlights the critical role that an online presence plays in business growth and success.

Despite the clear benefits, many individuals and small businesses are unable to secure their own domain due to the financial burden of domain registration and hosting. The lack of access to this fundamental online tool stifles innovation, limits entrepreneurship, and excludes people from the opportunities the digital world provides.

The Solution

We are advocating for the creation of a free one-level domain (such as .com or similar) that would be limited to one domain per verified person, to limit spam. By introducing this domain, we can ensure that every person, regardless of financial means, has the opportunity to create a website, establish a brand, or promote a small business online. This initiative would open new doors for millions who are currently unable to afford the cost of a domain.

This action aligns with the mission of the ITU’s Internet for All campaign, which aims to bridge the digital divide and make the internet accessible to all people worldwide. A free, one-level domain, limited to one per individual, would foster greater online inclusion, enhance global innovation, and ensure that the internet remains a space where anyone, anywhere, can succeed.

Call to Action

We want ICANN, domain registrars, and industry stakeholders to take action to implement this change. The establishment of a free, one-level domain for everyone, with the condition of one domain per person, will empower individuals and small businesses to thrive in the digital age.

Sign this petition to support the creation of a free, one-level domain for all, promoting inclusivity, innovation, and equal access to the digital world.
