Introduce volleyball programs into Poteau schools
The Issue
As a parent in the Poteau School District, I can't express enough how important it is for our schools to offer a volleyball program, like so many others do. My daughter is one of many girls in Poteau who loves playing volleyball; it’s her passion and the only sport she wishes to engage in. However, due to the absence of volleyball programs in both the upper elementary and high school levels, we're faced with the dilemma of traveling across state lines to Arkansas, just to allow her the opportunity to play.
Volleyball is not just a sport; it's a great way to foster teamwork, improve physical health, and boost self-esteem among students. Yet, despite the growing interest in volleyball among our young girls, they lack a structured environment to develop their skills within their own community. This absence not only discourages participation but also leads to missed opportunities for scholarships and college recruitment.
Our neighboring districts have successfully implemented volleyball programs, benefiting students by providing the necessary resources and support. According to a study by the Women's Sports Foundation, high school girls who are involved in sports are more likely to do better academically, have higher self-confidence, and develop better interpersonal skills. It's time we offer our students these same opportunities right here in Poteau.
Implementing volleyball programs would be a forward-thinking investment in our students' future. The initial costs associated with establishing these programs will be far outweighed by the benefits of increased student engagement, improved academic performances, and enhanced school reputation. We can start small with club teams and gradually expand to competitive levels as interest grows.
We urge the Poteau School District Board to take this request seriously, explore possible funding options, and initiate talks with local businesses or alumni for sponsorship opportunities. Let’s enrich the lives of our students by providing access to this vital program.
