Introduce Regulation and Licensing for builders in the UK

The Issue

In the UK today, individuals can present themselves as builders without holding any formal qualifications, licensing, or regulatory oversight.

This lack of standards exposes homeowners and the public to serious risks, including unsafe construction, financial loss, and emotional distress.

Poor workmanship is not just an inconvenience—it can result in dangerous structural issues, fire hazards, faulty electrical systems, and long-term damage to homes. In many cases, the cost of repairing substandard work far exceeds the original project, leaving families financially strained with little recourse.

Unlike other skilled professions such as electricians and gas engineers—where certification and regulation are mandatory—general building work remains largely unregulated. This creates a loophole where unqualified individuals can operate freely, undermining trust in the industry and disadvantaging skilled, honest tradespeople who uphold high standards.

The current system also enables rogue operators to exploit consumers. Homeowners often have no reliable way to verify a builder’s competence before work begins, and legal routes for resolving disputes can be costly, slow, and ineffective.

We believe it is time for change.

We call on the UK Government to introduce:

A mandatory licensing system for builders
Minimum qualification and competency standards
A public register of certified builders
Clear accountability and enforcement measures for substandard or unsafe work.

Regulation would protect consumers, improve safety, and elevate the reputation of the construction industry as a whole. It would ensure that those carrying out building work are properly trained, accountable, and committed to professional standards.

Everyone deserves to feel safe in their own home. Introducing regulation for builders is a necessary step toward protecting the public and restoring trust in the industry.
