Philosophy is the cornerstone of critical thinking, and yet, it is an often overlooked subject in the American education system. I believe that its inclusion is more important now than ever. In an age where misinformation spreads rampantly through social media, potentially confusing and misguiding our communities, it’s apparent that we, as a nation, are losing our grip on rational discourse. This is why I call for the mandatory introduction of philosophy courses in both middle and high school curricula across the United States.

From a personal standpoint, I can see a disturbing trend where children and young adults grow up inundated with opinions and information without the tools to critically analyze them. We are seeing generations that are eager to voice their thoughts, yet lack the philosophical backbone to discern constructive dialogue from mere noise. This absence has contributed to a societal shift towards untethered opinions over substantiated reasoning, and worse, has perpetuated unwarranted pretentiousness masked as informed discussion.

The integration of philosophy into our schools could also serve to better equip future generations with the skills necessary to address and engage with global issues more effectively. By fostering a curriculum that emphasizes logical reasoning, ethical understanding, and ethical reflection from an early age, schools can create a more informed and capable populace prepared to face challenges with intellectual rigor rather than ignorance.

To realize this vision, I propose the mandatory inclusion of at least one philosophy course per year for students from middle school through high school. Additionally, providing options for advanced placement courses in philosophy could cater to students with a keen interest in further developing their philosophical prowess and encourage the next generation of thinkers.

This call for action aims beyond just adding another class to students' schedules; it centers on empowering young minds to think more deeply and critically about the world they are part of and the future they will shape. Philosophy has the power to unlock potential, foster empathy, and inspire creative solutions to complex problems.

It's time we prioritized education that teaches children not only what to think but how to think. Encouraging the philosophical discourse at an early age could usher in an era where the population is more enlightened, less swayed by misinformation, and more united in rational progress.
