Introduce Baby Loss Certificates in Wales for Losses Before 24 Weeks

Introduce Baby Loss Certificates in Wales for Losses Before 24 Weeks
The Issue
In England, grieving parents who lose a baby before 24 weeks can now apply for a Baby Loss Certificate. This small but powerful document acknowledges their child’s existence and provides something tangible to remember them by. It validates their grief and ensures that their baby’s life is officially recognised.
In Wales, however, no such certificate exists. Families here are left without recognition, without something to hold on to, and without the comfort of seeing their baby’s life acknowledged. This makes the grief even harder to bear.
Twenty years ago, I lost my daughter due to severe neural tube defects, including a large parieto-occipital encephalocele and partial acrania. She was born at 18 weeks. To this day, I have nothing official to remember her by. The absence of recognition has had a detrimental impact on my life, leaving me with an emptiness that has never gone away.
All babies matter, no matter how short their time with us.
I am asking the Welsh Government to follow England’s lead and introduce Baby Loss Certificates in Wales. Every grieving parent should have the right to remembrance, recognition, and dignity.
Please support this petition so that no family in Wales has to feel their baby’s life went unrecognised.
