Stronger laws are only part of the solution.

Many people believe that increasing the maximum penalties for animal cruelty will automatically lead to tougher consequences for offenders. Unfortunately, that isn’t always the case.

Even when strong penalties exist in legislation, they are rarely handed down in court. In many cases, those who commit serious cruelty to animals receive relatively light sentences compared to the maximum penalties available.

This is why reform must go beyond simply raising penalties.

As part of the Arnie’s Law campaign, we are also advocating for greater education and awareness within the judiciary about the seriousness of animal cruelty offences and the profound harm they cause.
Animals experience fear, pain and suffering. Our laws should reflect that, and they should be applied in a way that actually protects them. Meaningful change requires both strong laws and strong enforcement.

The Arnie’s Law Working Group will continue pushing for reforms that ensure animal cruelty is treated with the seriousness it deserves.
