For those of us at Montgomery College, including myself, for whom English is not just a class, but a passion that defines our academic pursuits and career aspirations, the absence of an English major limits our ability to be the best students we can be. Introducing an English major at Montgomery College would not only fulfill the dreams of many passionate students like myself but also elevate the academic standing of our institution, faculty, and intersectional exploration of what defines a language that is the world's lingua franca yet not our own national language. 

At Montgomery College, students are already offered a wide array of programs and opportunities, but the lack of an English major stands out as a gap in our educational offerings. English majors gain not only critical skills in analysis, text-based research and communication that are invaluable across multiple industries, but also a cultivation of deep interpersonal thinking skills through the creation of images in language and dialogues between characters and students that advance education from obligatory to outstanding. These skills can be deployed across fields including media, education, publishing, law, and more. By introducing an English major, Montgomery College would empower a new wave of highly-equipped and well-thought out students with the tools to succeed in these dynamic and ever-evolving fields.

Montgomery County is an area rich in cultural cache, interwoven communities, and artistic expression. To fully represent this cornucopia of culture, an examination  of the equally rich and vital English language in an academic setting for the many students who desire such an outcome is necessary. English majors learn to think critically and develop skills in  rhetorical power that enables success through constantly changing economies, global landscapes, and local development. In addition, Montgomery College has the ability to partner with local publishing houses, writing centers, businesses, and other resources to help connect students who wish to use their voice in their career with the right path to have them start being heard. 

Data also demonstrates a demand for strong communicators and writers in the workforce. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, humanities majors, including English, often have flexible career paths and have shown sustained employment rates. By introducing an English major, Montgomery College would meet this demand while catering to the academic interests of its students. This initiative would not only benefit current students but also attract prospective students, enhancing the diversity and appeal of our academic programs.

I urge the administration at Montgomery College to consider this proposal seriously. Our students deserve the chance to explore their passions and turn them into fulfilling careers. Offering an English major would demonstrate a commitment to student growth and success.
