Introduce a social media accountability and safety act

The issue

I have been on TikTok for four years, and during this time, my experience has been marred by the presence of fake accounts dedicated to spreading lies and reposting my personal content, with the sole aim of smearing my name. Multiple reports to the platform yielded the same disappointing result: "no violation found." The online abuse not only persisted but escalated, leading me to a breaking point where I attempted to take my own life. This isn't merely online drama; it is a serious issue causing real harm here in New Zealand.

The internet, particularly social media, plays a pivotal role in our daily lives. However, the lack of accountability and effective safety measures on these platforms is concerning. New Zealand needs to adopt a proactive approach to protect its citizens against online harassment and abuse.

We propose the drafting and implementation of a Social Media Accountability and Safety Act. This legislation should require social media companies to:

1. Establish clear, enforceable guidelines to identify and remove harmful content swiftly.
2. Create robust systems for reporting abuse and ensuring timely responses and resolutions to instances of harassment.
3. Implement stronger identity verification measures to deter the creation of malicious fake accounts.
4. Enforce penalties and accountability measures for platforms failing to protect users from abuse.

By implementing such an act, we aim to foster a safer online environment where users can engage and connect without fear of abuse or harassment. Protecting mental health and well-being, particularly in the context of an increasingly digital landscape, should be a priority for our nation.

According to various studies, cyberbullying and online harassment can lead to severe mental health issues, including depression, anxiety, and suicidal tendencies. The gravity of this problem is underscored by its potentially devastating impacts on individuals and communities.

It is critical for New Zealand to set an example by taking affirmative steps toward ensuring digital safety and promoting a culture of accountability on these dominant platforms.

Join us in urging the New Zealand government to introduce the Social Media Accountability and Safety Act to protect all citizens from the harms of online harassment and abuse. Please sign this petition to demand immediate action to safeguard our digital spaces.
