Introduce a Permanent Men's Mental Health Round in AFL

Introduce a Permanent Men's Mental Health Round in AFL
The issue
The Australian Football League (AFL) holds a significant place in our nation's heart, and it holds an even more crucial position among its players. There are many families who personally have been deeply affected by the recent loss of several well-known players in the game, who tragically passed away due to suicide and mental health issues. These players, who once stood as role models and icons on the field, silently battled with their mental health concerns off the field.
It is easy to get caught up in the glamour and the excitement of the game, but it's crucial to remember the players' mental well-being. Football is not just a sport; it's a career that comes with its own set of pressures, expectations, and responsibilities. The intense scrutiny and the demand to perform consistently can adversely affect mental health.
AFL currently has rounds dedicated to Indigenous heritage (Sir Doug Nicholls Round) Multiculturalism (split across several rounds and games), and even a Pride game hosted by the Sydney Swans to celebrate diversity and inclusion. As for men’s mental health, we really only have the annual Spud’s Game hosted by St Kilda since 2019-20; this is a great start, but it is still not enough. It's time we also prioritise men’s mental health with a dedicated round. By introducing a permanent Men's Mental Health Round, the AFL can raise awareness, reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues, and provide players with the necessary support and resources. This initiative can potentially save lives by encouraging players to speak up and seek help without fear of judgment.
Statistics reveal that men are less likely to seek help for mental health issues due to societal stereotypes and perceived stigmas. In Australia, men account for six out of eight suicides every single day. Every 9 minutes, someone takes their own life in Australia. By having a specific round catered towards men’s mental health, the AFL can utilise its platform to advocate for change, raise awareness, and encourage open conversations about mens’ mental health, both among its players and the wider fan community - with not just 1 game held every year.
Each one of us can contribute to building a support system for these players by supporting this initiative. Let us members and supporters take this opportunity to convey to the AFL the importance of men’s mental wellness for its players and the broader community. By signing this petition, we urge the AFL to act responsibly and introduce a permanent Men's Mental Health Round to make a lasting impact on the players' lives and those around them. Please sign to make a difference today for our game and our nation.
