Introduce a Mechanism to Remove iCloud Activation Lock from Abandoned iPhones and iPads

The Issue

Millions of devices worldwide, such as iPhones and iPads, remain unused due to the iCloud Activation Lock features. Many such devices are not lost or stolen but simply abandoned, without any means for prospective users to access them. This not only contributes to electronic waste but also prevents the optimal usage of these high-quality devices.

For Apple Inc., this is a call to introduce a new process to allow the iCloud Activation Lock to be removed from abandoned devices under specific conditions. The intended device must be confirmed as abandoned, not stolen or lost. When a request for removal of the iCloud activation lock is submitted, the original owner should be notified daily for 90 consecutive days.

To balance user privacy and facilitate device usage, if the original owner doesn't respond within these 90 days to claim the device or report it as stolen, the iCloud Activation Lock should be removed by default. This change will allow unclaimed devices to be used while assuring original owners ample opportunity to reclaim their property.

Revising this feature will benefit consumers, reduce electronic waste, and enhance the reputation of Apple Inc. for prioritizing user-friendly and sustainable solutions. Let's encourage Apple Inc. to take this step for a greener and more inclusive future. Please sign this petition to support this change.
