Japan has returned to commercial whaling after leaving the International Whaling Commission. Japan supposedly stopped whaling 31 years ago but still butchered whales in the name of “scientific research.” Officials predict they will kill 227 whales. Most species of whales aren’t endangered and this like anything could turn into a fatal blow to certain whale populations. Let’s raise awareness to try to stop Japan’s dangerous return to whaling.

In an article recently published by the New York Times it talks about how the peak of the whale meat industry peaked in 1962. and whale meat is typically preferred by the older generation and producers of the meat hope to appeal to higher end restaurants. It is also said that ship costs are set to decrease as the whaling moves closer to home. Five ships went out on the water on July 1 the first day the ban was lifted and two minke whales were killed.

Whaling is also a very mixed topic in Japan. While Tokyo has fiercely defended whaling against international communities the people in Japan have mixed emotions. It has become less about the meat and more about national pride. Most people when shown a picture of a whale see wildlife, but if this isn’t about meat, why keep up the trade?

As environmental rights and animal rights become a more prominent issue in today’s world it is important we listen and look for major issues in our worldwide community. We must raise awareness and stop Japan’s return to a trade that isn’t severely needed to keep the economy afloat and kills our oceans wildlife.
