Riding an elephant is one of the most popular tourist activities in Asia. According to a report, more than three quarters of nearly 3,000 elephants used for tourist entertainment in Asia are kept in severely-cruel conditions.
Most tourists sign up for experiences with elephants because they love wild animals and don’t know about the cruelty behind the rides, tricks and photo opportunities. If people knew the facts, then they wouldn’t participate in cruel elephant activities
Wild elephants won’t let humans ride on top of them. So in order to tame a wild elephant, it is tortured as a baby to completely break its spirit. The process is called Phajaan, or “the crush”.
It involves ripping baby elephants away from their mothers and confining them in a very small space, like a cage or hole in the ground where they’re unable to move.
The baby elephants are then beaten into submission with clubs, pierced with sharp bull-hooks, and simultaneously starved and deprived of sleep for many days.
Most of the elephants suffer from severe arthritis and the carriage tied on the top of their body leaves their skin wounded and peeled.. the constant friction of the carriage with their skin causes tumors too. They are not given any medical attention and are just used as a source of income even after these malicious activities.
Please sign these petition so that these practices can be completely stopped and we move towards a better environment with beautiful animals in it. The elephants are to be tamed, and interacted with not to be over ridden and tortured.
