The Issue

We call on the government to revise the National Curriculum and introduce comprehensive rural education and sustainability across all ages and abilities. Our current educational system is outdated, overly prescriptive, and fails to encourage creativity, exploration, and the development of problem-solving skills. It also overlooks the critical need to inspire a love of learning and ensure every young person can reach their full potential.

Incorporating rural education is essential in equipping young people to face climate change, biodiversity loss, and food security challenges. By learning where their food comes from, understanding ecosystems, and recognising the impact of human activities on wildlife and watercourses, students can gain practical skills and knowledge to live sustainably, connect with nature, and nurture their health and well-being.

This education will empower young people to explore deeper questions about soil health, biodiversity, water management, social values, fairness, and connectivity within our food and natural systems. It will also help them make informed choices about the food they consume and the broader impact of those choices on the environment and society.

Rural education can tie seamlessly into existing subjects like home economics and hospitality. Imagine students who have learned how beef is raised, bread is baked from wheat, or cauliflower is grown, taking that knowledge into the kitchen. They can then explore how to create nutritious and affordable meals using these ingredients. This hands-on learning not only reinforces the connection between food production and consumption but also teaches valuable life skills, such as budgeting, meal planning, and nutrition. By integrating these elements, we can foster a holistic understanding of food systems, sustainability, and health.

Currently, supermarkets dominate 95% of our food supply, and processed foods are a significant factor in the rising health crisis, putting an additional strain on the NHS. Our food system contributes to waste, excessive energy consumption, and reduced food quality. Alarming statistics show that 31.3% of Year 6 children in the most deprived areas are living with obesity, with an additional 12.1% overweight. This trend underscores the urgent need for change.

By including rural education and sustainability in the curriculum, we can challenge the status quo. Rural education goes beyond traditional classroom lessons, teaching life skills such as planning, resilience, community cooperation, and self-sufficiency. It also fosters an appreciation for biodiversity, wildlife conservation, and the sustainable management of natural resources. These skills and values help cultivate a sense of purpose and fulfilment, fostering a respect for nature that can positively influence other aspects of life.

The rural environment faces numerous challenges, balancing societal benefits with environmental and health impacts. Despite these challenges, many rural communities and farmers are committed to sustainable and ethical practices. It is vital that we educate the next generation about these practices and the importance of sustaining healthy ecosystems.

We are calling for change to offer hope for a brighter future. By integrating rural education and sustainability into mainstream education, we can foster a culture of sustainable practices, reducing climate change anxiety, obesity, and mental health disorders. This approach will promote awareness and growth of circular systems, enhancing efficiency and reducing waste, ultimately improving our environment.
