The Issue

Hello everyone, my name is Claire Berrigan, and I am autistic. I have made it my mission to advocate for myself and others on platforms like LinkedIn. Today, I am reaching out to shine a light on a matter that is not just personal to me, but crucial to many people around the world—people who, like me, communicate differently.

There are millions of individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism who are non-verbal or experience occasional selective mutism. Communication is a fundamental right and should be accessible to all, yet many of these individuals are left without the necessary tools to express themselves. This is where Lámh sign language can make a tremendous impact. Lámh is a unique system of manual signs specifically designed to support communication among people with intellectual disabilities and autism. While it already brings immense benefits to individuals in regions where it's implemented, its potential reach could be global.

Globally, there needs to be an initiative to integrate Lámh as a widely accepted communication tool. By doing so, we can offer a voice to those who often struggle to be heard. Research shows that when individuals with autism or intellectual disabilities are provided with communication tools like Lámh, their ability to interact improves, leading to enhancements in their social skills and overall quality of life. This is not just about communication; it's about inclusion, dignity, and human rights.

The inclusion of Lámh sign language in educational curricula, healthcare settings, and public services could serve as a cornerstone for more inclusive societies. However, this requires the collective effort of educators, healthcare professionals, policymakers, and the general public. We need awareness campaigns, funding for training programs, and policy adaptations to integrate Lámh more broadly.

By signing this petition, you are supporting a movement towards an inclusive world where everyone, regardless of their verbal capabilities, is given the opportunity to express themselves and connect with others. Let's bridge the communication gap for non-verbal individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism by making Lámh sign language a global standard. Your signature can prompt the changes needed for a more equitable and understanding society.

Please sign this petition to support the global integration of Lámh sign language, and let’s make the world more communicative and inclusive for everyone.
