The International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) defines antisemitism as “a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities."
The IHRA’s working definition of antisemitism has formally been recognized by the United States Department of State, as well as by Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Canada, Israel, the French National Assembly, Austria, Scotland, Romania, Bulgaria, Lithuania, Moldova, Greece, Cyprus, North Macedonia, Serbia, Argentina, the European Parliament, Albania, the Global Imams Council, and countless other governmental institutions and universities across the world.
In recent years, there has been a record spike in antisemitic attacks across the nation, such as:
- Attempted arson at a Greater MetroWest, New Jersey synagogue.
Followers of Nick Fuentes hosting a “Ye is right, change my mind” event at FL State University.
- Former Proud Boys member Kyle Chapman (Based Stickman), stating to his followers on Telegram that “Jews [are] pushing a worldwide gay and transgender agenda targeting mostly the young and whose end goal is the destruction of the nuclear family and normalization of pedophilia.”
In January 2023, there has been an extreme spike in the number of attacks against Jewish collegiate institutions, such as:
- Banners stating “Ye is right” at the University of Alabama and Florida State University.
- Swastika graffiti at Georgetown University.
- Antisemitic graffiti at UCLA projecting “Ye was right."
Since October 2022, Ye (Kanye West) has regularly used his platform to antagonize, vilify, and target Jewish people.
StopAntisemitism, a grassroots advocacy organization, gave UC Berkeley an “F” rating for failing to protect Jewish students from antisemitism and excluding Jewish students from DEI efforts in their 2022 Antisemitism on U.S. College & University Campuses report.
On January 24, 2023, antisemitic graffiti was found on the entrance of the ASUC Student Union on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley stating “NO JEW GO AWAY.”
Jewish people comprise 2.4% of the U.S. population and 0.2% of the overall world population, but are the targets of 54.9% of “all religiously motivated hate crimes.”
This definition would help combat this rise of discrimination against Jewish students at UC Berkeley
