West Philippine Sea is the official designation by the Philippine government of eastern parts of the South China Sea which are included in the Philippines' exclusive economic zone. China prevents Filipinos from fishing in the West Philippine Sea, which is the primary source of income among fishermen. China irreversibly damaged the regional marine environment by its destructive and hazardous fishing practices, and by its harvesting of endangered species.

The Philippines is losing about P33.1 billion annually from the damaged reef ecosystems at Panatag (Scarborough) Shoal and the Spratly Islands mainly due to China’s reclamation activities.

According to Supreme Court Senior Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, China will attempt to reclaim Scarborough Shoal and turn it into their island before the end of the term of President Rodrigo Duterte.
