Installation of Speed Bumps at the Intersection of Van Doesburg Street and Wyland Road

The Issue

To the City of Cape Town,

We, the undersigned residents and concerned citizens of the community surrounding Van Doesburg Street and Wyland Road, as well as Van Doesburg and Potsdam, urgently petition the City of Cape Town to take immediate action to install speed bumps at the intersections of Van Doesburg Street and Wyland Road and Van Doesburg and Potsdam.

The intersections in question have become hotbeds for safety concerns due to the constant disregard for the stop signs by motorists. This flagrant disregard not only poses a threat to drivers but also places the lives of our school children at risk as they navigate these intersections on a daily basis.

Here are our primary concerns:

Failure to Obey Stop Signs: Despite the presence of stop signs, many motorists routinely ignore them, treating the intersections as if they were non-existent and main roads. This reckless behaviour has led to numerous near-miss accidents and close calls, endangering the lives of pedestrians and other motorists alike.
Speeding: The lack of traffic calming measures at the intersections has also encouraged speeding. Drivers often accelerate through the intersections without regard for the safety of others, creating a hazardous environment for all road users.
Safety of School Children: Of particular concern is the safety of the school children who must cross these intersections daily to reach their schools. Without proper traffic calming measures in place, these children are placed in unnecessary danger every time they cross the road.
Community Safety: The overall safety and well-being of our community are at stake. It is imperative that the City of Cape Town takes proactive measures to address the dangerous conditions at these intersections before a tragedy occurs.
Therefore, we respectfully request that the City of Cape Town take the following actions:

Installation of Speed Bumps: Immediate installation of speed bumps at the intersections of Van Doesburg Street and Wyland Road, as well as Van Doesburg and Potsdam, to deter speeding and encourage compliance with traffic regulations.
Increased Enforcement: We urge the City to increase enforcement efforts at the intersections to deter motorists from ignoring the stop signs and speeding.
Pedestrian Safety Measures: Implementation of additional pedestrian safety measures, such as improved crosswalk markings and signage, to enhance the safety of school children and pedestrians crossing the intersections.
We believe that these measures are necessary to address the ongoing safety concerns at the intersections and to prevent future accidents and injuries. The safety of our community, particularly our children, should be a top priority for the City of Cape Town.

We thank you for your attention to this matter and trust that you will take swift and decisive action to address our concerns.

Sincerely,

Residents of Bothasig Van Doesburg Street, Wyland Road, Diaz Street, Potsdam Road, and Vissershof Road.
