Installation of Rumble Strips for Ethiebeaton Roundabout (A92 Westbound)

Installation of Rumble Strips for Ethiebeaton Roundabout (A92 Westbound)
The Issue
Residents of both the Victoria Grange and Ashludie Grange developments, and surrounding areas of Monifieth, have raised concern about the safety of the Ethiebeaton Roundabout. There has been various road traffic accidents (RTA's), whereby drivers coming from Carnoustie/Arbroath (A92 Westbound) seem to approach the roundabout too fast and lose control. Just a couple examples are:
1. A car collided with a van; the car ended up on top of the roundabout and van tilting on the edge.
2. A car careering onto the roundabout, over the other side, onto the walking path before hitting the rock face – this incident could have ended significantly worse had pedestrians been walking towards the Ethiebeaton Retail Park.
This matter was first reported in August 2023 to BEAR Scotland, Angus Council and then onto the Traffic Co-ordination Group for discussion at their next meeting. The request was for the installation of rumble strips (like at the A92 Eastbound approach to Swallow Roundabout) to reduce speed and enhance safety for both motorists and pedestrians.
The feedback from the Traffic Co-ord Group was:
'The matter was raised for consideration at a meeting of the Angus Area Traffic Co-ordination Group. Representation at this meeting included various Angus Council directorates and Police Scotland, all of whom have an interest in road safety and traffic management.
Spot checks were carried out prior to the meeting to assess the situation. During these site visits it was observed that speed limit signage and count down signage is located on both sides of the approach road from Arbroath along with associated roundabout direction signage. The signs are in good condition and clearly visible to approaching drivers. The signs are located well in advance of the junction and give drivers enough time to slow down on their approach to the junction.
Taking the above into consideration the Traffic Co-ord Group agreed that there was not a significant road safety issue at this location and that the installation of rumble strips was not appropriate.'
Cllr Lloyd Melville has requested for this decision to be re-considered at the next Traffic Co-ord Group meeting, scheduled to be held on Tuesday 26th March 2024, due to ongoing safety concerns.
It now seems that local resident 'voices' will be required to help influence the decision-making process at the Traffic Co-ord Group meeting and make improvements to reduce vehicle speed and increase safety.
