Install Speed Cameras and Radar Speed Signs on B 1/4 Road and 30 Rd in Grand Junction

The Issue

We are grieving parents because on June 6th, 2023, our 16-year-old son Devlend Jones, who attended Palisade High School, was riding his skateboard on 30 and B 1/4 road in Grand Junction, Colorado, when he was hit and killed by a driver doing at least double the speed limit. The person who hit him was trying to jump the hill, turning our quiet neighborhood into their personal racetrack. There have been multiple complaints about this road already. Teenagers call it tickle hill and do it for fun, while disregarding the lives of others. On 11/15/23 I was standing on the road to visit our sons memorial marker, and another person was driving down that road at at least 70mph. That was when I decided I had to do something more. If I was in the road, instead of the ditch, I would have been killed as well.  I  have attached the link to the news article that was published the next day. https://www.nbc11news.com/video/2023/06/07/pedestrian-killed-crash/. This tragedy has left an indelible mark on our family, but it's not just about us - this is about the safety of everyone in Grand Junction, CO.

Speeding is a serious issue that puts lives at risk every day. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), speeding killed over 9,000 people in America in one year alone. We need immediate action to prevent more families from experiencing such devastating loss.

We are calling for the installation of speed cameras that issue tickets and radar speed signs on B 1/4 road and 30 rd in Grand Junction. These measures have been proven effective elsewhere; they can deter reckless driving behaviors like speeding, thus reducing accidents.

Let's make our streets safer for everyone - pedestrians, cyclists, skateboarders alike - by ensuring drivers adhere to posted speed limits through strict enforcement mechanisms. Please sign this petition today to help bring about much-needed change before another life is lost unnecessarily.
