The issue

Our street has become an increasingly dangerous place due to speeding cars. Residents have growing concerns about the speed of vehicles travelling along Park Road. Despite being a residential street, many vehicles regularly travel at unsafe speeds, creating significant risks for pedestrians, cyclists, pets, and local families.

This concern is especially important because there are many children living in the area. There is also a daycare centre located at the end of the street. As a result, parents and carers regularly walk with young children, and the current traffic conditions make many residents feel unsafe.

Our concerns are not merely hypothetical. Approximately two years ago, a dog was struck and killed by a vehicle travelling at excessive speed on Park Road. Disturbingly, the driver did not stop after the incident. This event highlighted the dangers posed by speeding vehicles and the potential for even more serious consequences involving children or other pedestrians.

Statistics support our case: Speed bumps can reduce traffic speed by up to 20% and decrease accident rates by 40% in residential areas, as studies from various cities have shown. Implementing speed bumps on our road will not only slow down the reckless drivers but also ensure a safer environment for everyone living and working in the area.

We respectfully request that Council undertake a traffic assessment of Park Road and consider the installation of speed bumps, or other appropriate traffic-calming measures to reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety for all road users.  This simple measure could prevent future tragedies and give our community peace of mind.
