Install speed bumps for school zone safety in North Las Vegas

The Issue

A 12-year-old boy's life has been permanently altered due to a grievous accident that occurred while he was simply crossing a street. Bail was set at $250,000 for the Las Vegas man charged with DUI and hit-and-run. This tragedy is, unfortunately, not an isolated incident in the North Las Vegas area, particularly between Rancho High School and JD Smith Middle School, Von Tobel middle school and Tom Williams Elementary School. Where pedestrian safety is frequently compromised due to speeding drivers.

The impact of vehicle speeding not only endangers our children but also threatens the safety of all pedestrians and neighborhood residents. It creates a climate of fear and constant worry for parents and community members. Our streets should be a sanctuary, a secure path for our children's commutes to and from school—not a corridor of danger.

We must act decisively to prevent further tragedies. We urge the City of North Las Vegas Public Works Department and the Traffic Engineering Division to prioritize the installation of traffic calming measures, such as speed bumps or humps, in this 25 MPH school zone. These measures have proven effective in compelling drivers to reduce their speed, thereby enhancing pedestrian safety and saving lives.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), traffic calming solutions, like speed bumps, can reduce accidents by up to 30%. In school zones, their presence not only ensures the safety of students but also cultivates a culture of mindful and responsible driving.

The lives of our children, families, and neighbors cannot be subjected to unnecessary risk each day. By agreeing to install speed bumps, you are committing to prioritizing the lives and safety of thousands who call North Las Vegas home.

We implore local authorities to listen to the concerns of their community and take immediate action. The safety of our streets is in your hands.

Please sign this petition urging our city leaders to implement these essential safety measures without delay.
