The Issue

Living near Nicolls Road in Holbrook, NY has become increasingly unbearable due to the constant noise from the traffic. Despite efforts to mitigate the sound by updating our siding, windows, and insulation, and planting trees, the noise level inside our home is intolerable. Even with all windows and doors closed, the sound of cars is disturbingly loud within our living space.

This issue affects not only our family but also many others residing along Nicolls Road between the Long Island Expressway (LIE) and Sunrise Highway. The relentless noise pollution significantly diminishes the quality of life, raises stress levels, and negatively impacts our health and well-being. According to studies, long-term exposure to high noise levels can lead to serious health problems, including sleep disorders and heart conditions. The population in Suffolk County has drastically increased, as has the number of vehicles driving on Nicolls Road each day. The sound and lack of safety on Singingwood Drive, Springmeadow Drive, Skylark Drive, Greenbelt Parkway, and surrounding streets poses a great concern to these communities. Unfortunately, since there are no traffic lights on Nicolls Road in this area, Nicolls Road becomes a speedway for cars, which negatively impacts all of the wonderful communities that back it.

A sound barrier wall could be the solution to restore the peace and tranquility that the residents of this area deserve. Other communities have successfully implemented such barriers, reflecting a significant decrease in noise levels and subsequent increase in overall life satisfaction for the residents.

We urge the Town of Islip and relevant authorities to prioritize this issue and assess the feasibility of constructing a sound barrier along Nicolls Road. By taking this action, they would be promoting healthier living conditions and improving the quality of life for all affected residents.

Sign this petition to support the installation of a sound barrier wall, and help bring a much-needed respite from the clamorous streets to the community of Holbrook, NY.
