I am a resident of Saanich and a frequent pedestrian along Doncaster Dr. and Jennifer Rd. These roads are bustling with families, children, and other community members walking to and from school or simply enjoying a stroll with their pets. Despite this, there are no sidewalks on either street, forcing us to navigate narrow sections and blind corners that pose significant safety risks.

Unfortunately Saanich has a sidewalk deficit:  "Right now, only about 35% of Saanich’s roads have a sidewalk on at least one side. Most local residential streets were built without sidewalks, so there’s work to be done to catch up on safe walking infrastructure." Every day, children on their way to school, elderly citizens, and everyday families risk walking close to fast-moving traffic. The absence of sidewalks means parts of these streets plunge into ditches or are overgrown with vegetation, making it nearly impossible to walk safely. This situation is not only inconvenient but perilous, especially during adverse weather conditions when roads are slippery.

According to the World Health Organization, pedestrian fatalities account for 26% of all road-related deaths. These traffic hazards are significant concerns for our tight-knit community. Other cities have successfully mitigated such dangers by investing in pedestrian infrastructure. For instance, similar projects have led to a decrease in pedestrian accidents by up to 40% in various urban areas. It is time Saanich prioritizes its citizens' walking safety in the same way.

By installing sidewalks and making other necessary improvements, we can significantly enhance safety for everyone. This would not only protect our families and children but also promote a more active, healthier lifestyle to all residents. Let's stand together and urge the local government of Saanich to take action now to implement sidewalks and enhance pedestrian safety on Doncaster Dr. and Jennifer Rd.
