I live in Big Coppitt Key, FL, a growing community that is unfortunately marred by an ongoing safety issue. Our roads - Barcelona Rd., Avenue F, Fourth St., and Puerta Dr. are extremely busy and often used by children to get to and from their homes to bus stops and parks. The lack of sidewalks on these roads poses a significant risk for pedestrians, especially our children.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pedestrian fatalities account for 17% of all traffic fatalities nationwide in recent years. In Florida alone, pedestrian deaths accounted for more than 20% of total traffic deaths in 2019 (source: NHTSA). This is not just a statistic; it's a potential reality we face every day here in Big Coppitt Key.

We believe that installing sidewalks along these busy roads will significantly reduce the risk of accidents involving pedestrians. It will provide a safe path for our children going to school or playing at parks, as well as other residents who walk or jog along these streets.
