Install sidewalks and safety lighting on Meadow Street, Tarrytown
Install sidewalks and safety lighting on Meadow Street, Tarrytown
The Issue
For generations, residents of north Tarrytown have voiced their need for sidewalks and safety lighting along Meadow Street from 119/White Plains Road to Sheldon Avenue. As a resident and a parent, I find this lack of infrastructure a pressing safety concern that directly impacts my family and community. My children, like many others in our neighborhood, are unable to safely visit the park at Elizabeth Mascia Child Care Center. This issue becomes particularly acute from October through March when daylight is scarce.
The absence of sidewalks and adequate lighting, especially under the 1-87 overpass, not only limits our children's ability to explore and engage with their community, but also poses significant safety risks for adult pedestrians. Without a designated walkway and appropriate illumination, adults and children are forced to navigate the busy street in dangerous conditions, particularly at dusk or even on dark, cloudy days.
Tarrytown's charm as a historic and close-knit community should not come at the expense of safety. According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data, pedestrian fatalities occur most frequently in urban areas (74%) and at non-intersection locations (73%). These statistics underscore the urgency of installing sidewalks and streetlights in areas like Meadow Street, where pedestrian traffic is high. It is an access road for several neighborhoods to the main artery of retail and services on White Plains Road.
The lack of these essential features inhibits community engagement, disrupts daily routines, and leaves families, especially parents, anxious about the well-being of their children.
Therefore, we call upon the local authorities in Tarrytown, NY, to prioritize the installation of sidewalks and safety lighting along this critical pathway. Ensuring the safety of all residents, particularly children, while enhancing their ability to access community spaces is a fundamental responsibility.
Let's stand together to make Meadow Street safer and more accessible for everyone. Please sign this petition to show your support for a safer Tarrytown.
