Install sharps bins at OCAD U - Waterfront, TMU, and UOF

Install sharps bins at OCAD U - Waterfront, TMU, and UOF
The Issue
Being a type 1 diabetic requires a constant vigilance towards managing insulin levels, which includes the regular and necessary use of needles. As a DemocracyXChange delegate navigating the bustling campuses of OCAD University - Waterfront, Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU), and the Université de l'Ontario français (UOF), I've experienced firsthand the absence of designated sharps disposal bins, which forces me and others like me to carry used needle tips in our bags and on our person. This is not just a matter of convenience; it's a question of hygiene and dignity.
In Canada, there are approximately 350,000 individuals living with type 1 diabetes. These students, staff, and visitors at these campuses deserve access to proper sharps disposal facilities. The innovation of insulin, a discovery made right here in Toronto, transformed the lives of millions worldwide, and it should be a source of pride that our institutions support those who depend on it daily.
Furthermore, sharps bins have already been successfully installed in other public places across Ontario, including the ONroute rest stops and just up the street too, in the washrooms of Union Station. This precedence highlights the feasibility and necessity of providing such essential facilities at OCAD U - Waterfront , TMU and UOF campuses, ensuring that everyone has the means to dispose of medical waste safely and hygienically.
The absence of sharps bins not only poses a health hazard but also sends a disheartening message about the value placed on the needs of persons with type 1 diabetes and those with type 2 diabetes who require injections as part of their diabetes management program. By installing these bins, OCAD U, TMU, and UOF can showcase their commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all students and staff.
Let's call on the administrations of OCAD U, TMU, and UOF to take immediate action to install sharps bins on their campuses. This small but significant change will demonstrate genuine care for the wellbeing of students and show leadership in public health safety. Please sign this petition to urge university officials to provide these necessary facilities and help create a safe and respectful environment for everyone.
