The Issue

In recent years, the I-74 bridge that spans between Iowa and Illinois has seen a troubling increase in mental health crisis instances. Too many lives have been lost or forever changed due to this growing issue on the I-74 bridge. The pain and anguish felt by families and friends left behind is something no one should have to endure. As someone personally affected, I am speaking up for the safety and well-being of everyone in our community.

Despite the need for action, we have seen cities investing heavily in unnecessary infrastructure upgrades with the aim of boosting revenue, while critical safety measures have been overlooked. Given that so much has already been spent not only on the bridge itself but also on additional projects in the surrounding area, it is imperative to redirect resources to address this urgent need by installing safety netting on the I-74 bridge.

Safety nets have proven to be effective in other locations around the world, significantly reducing suicides and suicidal attempts from bridges. The cost of installing these safety features is more than justified when considering the potential to save lives and provide a barrier for those in distress.

We urge local and state authorities from both Iowa and Illinois, as well as the relevant city councils, to prioritize public safety and mental health by taking immediate action to install safety netting on the I-74 bridge. Let us come together not just to talk about mental health, but to demonstrate our commitment by implementing practical solutions that make a real difference.

By signing this petition, you are joining a collective movement to protect our community and offer hope to those who need it most. Let's create an environment where every individual knows they have support and alternative paths to healing. Please sign the petition today to make the I-74 bridge a safer place for everyone.
