Install safety measures at St. Andrews/Grand Ridge Drive

The Issue

Living close to the intersection of St. Andrews Street and Grand Ridge Drive in West Galt, Cambridge, has become a source of constant stress and anxiety for my family and many of our neighbours. The intersection is notorious for regular accidents and alarming near misses, often resulting in chaotic scenes right outside our homes. This past summer, I personally witnessed a frightening accident and, unfortunately, it was not the first or the last time. The screeching of tires, blaring horns, and the raised voices of frustrated motorists have become alarmingly familiar sounds. It's a situation that leaves us perpetually on edge, worried about the inevitable tragedy that might prompt the changes we so desperately need.

We are passionately advocating for preventive measures to be taken before a fatal accident occurs. I have spoken to several residents who share the same fear — that substantial improvements will only be made after a catastrophic loss of life. We cannot and should not wait for a tragedy to act. Particularly concerning is the fact that this intersection sits in a 50 zone, yet vehicles, including dump trucks and motorcycles, regularly exceed safe speeds. This recklessness not only endangers drivers but also pedestrians, especially families like mine who dread crossing the road with young children.

We propose urgent interventions to curb these hazards, such as installing traffic lights or a roundabout to regulate vehicle flow and speed. Additional signage alerting drivers to the hazardous intersection, along with speed cameras or rumble strips, could drastically mitigate risks. These measures are not just necessary; they are imperative to ensure our neighbourhood’s safety and wellbeing.

Moreover, community engagement initiatives could be promoted, addressing road safety awareness to foster a culture of mutual respect and caution among drivers passing through our community. Working together with city officials and law enforcement can help implement these solutions effectively and sustainably.

Let's not wait for a heart-wrenching incident to force our hand. We urge local authorities, including Cambridge City Council, to recognize the gravity of this issue and take immediate, tangible action. By signing this petition, you are voicing your concern and urging immediate change to protect the lives of our community members and enhance the overall safety of West Galt. Your support is crucial in pushing for these essential safety measures — let’s take a stand together and effect the change needed before it's too late.

A Note from another Concerned Neighbour:

Every day is a lottery trying to make a turn from Grand Ridge Dr onto St Andrews without encountering a near miss. For pedestrians, the danger is even more pronounced, as they are vulnerable to the high-speed traffic that frequently barrels through this intersection. This isn't just an isolated experience; it's an ongoing concern for everyone who traverses this route daily.

Recent statistics and eyewitness accounts have highlighted the urgent need for improved safety measures at this precarious intersection. Traffic studies indicate that intersections with high traffic flow, like St Andrews and Grand Ridge Dr, are hotspots for accidents and near-misses. Unfortunately, these statistics rarely convey the gravity of the situation or the anxiety it causes to those using this intersection.
Introducing a 4-way stop sign, installing traffic lights, creating a roundabout or deploying speed cameras are all effective and proven solutions. Numerous studies have shown that these measures drastically reduce accidents and improve overall safety at intersections. For instance, studies have shown that a 4-way stop can reduce accident rates by 50%, and traffic lights have been known to cut down on the same dramatically. Speed cameras can deter reckless driving and encourage vehicles to adhere to speed limits, further safeguarding pedestrians and other motorists.
Reengineering this intersection with any of these measures will not only alleviate stress for daily commuters but also increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists, ensuring that everyone can navigate the area confidently and securely.

THE GOAL:
We’re aiming to gather 500 signatures by February 16th, just before Family Day — because we’re doing this for our families. Reaching this goal will show the City that our community is united and serious about improving safety at the St. Andrews & Grand Ridge intersection. Hitting 500 signatures by February 16th gives the City enough time to review the issue, plan, and begin implementing safety measures by spring/summer, when pedestrian, cyclist, and neighbourhood traffic increases the most.
