Driver behaviour in Aura has led to the tragic loss of lives due to running of red lights. Just over this past weekend, two people lost their lives in a car crash that could have potentially been prevented.

Monash University in 2003 analyzed the impact of red-light cameras installed at signalized intersections in Melbourne, with a focus on reducing crash rates and improving road safety.

The study found a significant reduction in fatalities and severe injuries at intersections equipped with red-light cameras.

Fatal crashes were reduced by 47%, and crashes that resulted in serious injury dropped by 31%.

Overall Crash Reduction: There was a general reduction in total crashes (including less severe incidents), with an approximate 20-30% decrease in crash rates at intersections where cameras were installed.

Spillover Effect: Interestingly, the study also observed a "spillover effect" where intersections without red-light cameras in the vicinity of those with cameras saw an improvement in safety, likely due to changes in driver behavior.

We need red-light cameras to prevent future tragedies this happening again.
