The Issue

We are calling on Sunderland City Council and Northumbria Police to take urgent action to improve road safety around the Nissan factories.

Following the tragic incident on Nissan Way in the early hours of 11/09/2026, which resulted in a man losing his life, we believe something needs to change.

This is not the first serious incident that has happened around these roads, and I’m absolutely certain it won’t be the last if something isn’t done.

The roads surrounding the Nissan factories, including Nissan Way, the A1290, Cherry Blossom Way, the A1231, Turbine Way and the surrounding roads and junctions, are used by thousands of people every day.

Anyone who works in the area can tell you that some people drive like absolute maniacs when finishing their shifts, particularly on the late shift. People appear to be willing to speed, take risks and drive dangerously just to cut a few minutes off their journey.

It shouldn’t have taken someone losing their life for this to be seriously considered, but unfortunately this is where we are.

We are asking for an in depth review of the roads surrounding the Nissan factories and for actual action to follow. This should include the installation of speed cameras and red light cameras where appropriate, as well as any other measures needed to make these roads safer.

We are not asking for this to simply be looked at and forgotten about. We want something to actually be done before another person is seriously injured or another family is left without a loved one.

There are thousands of people who work in these factories, as well as their families and people who live in the surrounding areas. Everyone should be able to travel to and from work without having to worry about being killed because of somebody else’s dangerous driving.

If you agree that more needs to be done to make the roads around Nissan Sunderland safer, please sign this petition and show Sunderland City Council and Northumbria Police just how much support there is for action to be taken.
