The Issue

Swings and slides are too hot to use even before summer fully kicks in. It's heartbreaking to watch as children, full of energy and excitement, approach their favorite playgrounds, only to find the play equipment scalding under the sun. Younger kids, especially, are at risk of burns if they play on these hot surfaces during high heat. In Utah County, where summer temperatures can reach 100°F or more, this becomes a significant safety concern for parents and caregivers.

Installing shades over playgrounds and play equipment is a straightforward and effective solution. By providing shade, not only do we make play areas usable during peak temperatures, we also reduce the risk of heat-related injuries for our children. This initiative could transform hot, empty playgrounds into safe havens for laughter and joy, even in the warmest months.

Evidence from other communities demonstrates the benefits of shading playgrounds. For instance, a study conducted in the City of Phoenix, Arizona demonstrated that shaded playgrounds reduce the surface temperature of equipment by 20-40°F. Implementing similar shading solutions in Utah County parks would ensure children have a safe environment to play, regardless of the time of year.

We urge local city councils and park and recreation departments in Utah County to prioritize the installation of shades over playground structures in all public parks. Parents and community members believe that this is a necessary step to protect our young ones and improve their quality of life.

Please sign this petition to show your support for installing shades in our parks, and help create a safer, more enjoyable environment for children in Utah County.
