As the Director of the Harbor Department, I want to give people a clear picture of where things stand with signage in this area.
The original sign near the sea lion haul-out had been provided by NOAA several years ago, but it had become faded and outdated, and the contact phone number on it was no longer valid. Because it was no longer serving its purpose, we removed it.
Since then, we've reached out to NOAA directly to request an updated sign. They've told us they're looking into possible funding sources for a replacement. In the meantime, our department is not waiting — we are currently working on producing a new sign ourselves, based on an official NOAA template, so that accurate information and safety guidance is back in place for visitors and wildlife alike.
The Harbor Department has the discretion to add or remove signage in this area, and I want everyone who signed this petition to know that a new, permanent sign is actively in the works.
