Install permanent marine wildlife protection signs
The Issue

I live near Channel Islands Harbor and spend a great deal of time there. I’ve come to appreciate the sea lions and other marine wildlife that make this harbor such a special place.
In recent months, I have seen injured sea lions and birds with fishing line wrapped around their necks or feet. I’ve also witnessed discarded fishing line, hooks, and litter left behind, as well as visitors approaching sea lions too closely to take selfies or photos. These actions can disturb sea lions while they are resting in their haul-out areas and increase the risk of injury to wildlife.
I believe most people simply aren’t aware of the risks or that California sea lions are protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act.
This petition isn’t about blaming anyone or stopping responsible fishing or photography. It’s about education, stewardship, and helping everyone enjoy the harbor responsibly. Simple, permanent signs can remind visitors to keep a safe distance from sea lions, properly dispose of fishing line and trash, respect haul-out areas, and know who to call if they see an injured or entangled marine mammal.
I believe small changes can make a big difference. By working together as a community, we can help protect the wildlife that makes Channel Islands Harbor a place we’re all proud to enjoy—for both people and the animals that call it home.
