The Issue

I want to start this petition by sharing something deeply personal. I personally know several young people who have jumped from the Arthur Ravenel Bridge, and it is not okay. It’s heartbreaking to think of the lives, full of potential, that have been lost. Families are left shattered, and communities are burdened with grief.

The Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge, an iconic structure in Charleston, South Carolina, stands as a symbol of connection and architectural beauty. But, tragically, it has also become a site where over 32 people have chosen to end their lives just since 2019. These people, who had so much ahead of them, needed our support and intervention before tragedy struck.

Statistics have shown that bridges, without proper safety barriers, are potential hotspots for suicide. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide was the tenth leading cause of death overall in the United States. Implementing preventative measures, like physical barriers, has proven effective in significantly reducing suicide rates in other locations. For example, the installation of safety nets beneath the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco is expected to decrease suicide rates drastically once operational.

We can prevent further tragedies from occurring on the Arthur Ravenel Bridge by installing permanent barricades designed to deter and prevent impulsive decisions. These barriers, while subtle, can be lifesaving, giving individuals critical moments to pause, think, and seek help. Implementing such preventive measures can reinforce the message that every life is valuable and that help is always available.

This petition calls on the local government, engineers, and architects to collaborate on a design for durable, effective barricades that harmonize with the bridge's aesthetic while providing a robust deterrence against suicide attempts. The cost of implementation would be an investment in preserving the lives of future generations, reducing the emotional and economic toll that suicides wreak on families and communities.

Please join me in advocating for a safer Arthur Ravenel Bridge. Your signature can help push for the changes needed to transform this site from one of sorrow to one of hope and safety. Let’s protect our community and show that we care about every single life. Please sign this petition to instigate this urgent, lifesaving change.
