Install pedestrian crossing at the Lower Coombe street and High street/South end junction
The Issue
My name is Marley King and I live near the junction of Lower Coombe Street, Coombe road, High street and South end . I have set up this petition because I do not feel safe crossing this road to get to the shops or take my children to school.
I know from speaking to other people about this junction that they feel the same way. Parents are scared to walk this way to school, the elderly, disabled people and those who and visually impared have to take much longer routes to feel safe. This is a busy junction and there are 2 primary schools near by. Heathfield academy and Howard Primary school and a number of care homes nearby, It is also in south end the areas restaurant district and lots of shops which residents need to access to.
There are currently traffic lights for motor vehicles at this junction, but no signals for people wanting to cross the road. Transport for London (TfL), which is responsible for these lights, must consider the safety of children, older and disabled people at every single junction, prioritising people, not just vehicles.
The Mayor is not on target to meet his Vision Zero target for no one to be killed in or by a London bus by 2030, and for all deaths and serious injuries from road collisions to be eliminated from London’s streets by 2041. To help make this aim possible, all junctions in London with signals for traffic and without signals for people to cross should be reviewed, to make them truly accessible and safer for everyone.
In the last 5 years, there have been two serious collisions at this junction and a further nine minor incidents.
The Mayor is also failing to meet his Healthy Activity Target of 70% of people reporting 20 minutes of walking or cycling on the previous day by 2041. Improving the safety of this and all the other junctions in London without pedestrian signals will encourage more people to walk, wheel and cycle.
We call on TfL to install a Pelican (pedestrian light-controlled crossing) at each arm of the Lower Coombe street, Coombe Road, High Street and South End junction. TfL should also investigate how to make this crossing safer for people cycling and wheeling.
