The Issue

Growing up in Longmont, Colorado, horseshoe pitching was more than just a pastime; it was a cherished community tradition. Watching this beloved game gradually fade from our lives has been heartbreaking. With fewer and fewer opportunities to play, the rich camaraderie and the spirit of healthy competition that horseshoe pitching inspires are at risk. However, I firmly believe that by installing a National Horseshoe Pitchers Association (NHPA) facility at Hover Acres Park, we can revive this heritage.

Currently, Longmont lacks a dedicated venue where residents of all ages can engage in horseshoe pitching at a competitive level. An NHPA facility would not only provide top-level amenities to maintain and facilitate high-quality play, but would also serve as a beacon for youth outreach programs. By introducing organized events and leagues, we can inspire a new generation to take up the sport, ensuring its legacy continues within our community.

According to the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association, horseshoe pitching is more than just a recreational activity. It fosters physical fitness, strategic thinking, and social interaction. These are critical elements for our youth, promoting both health and community engagement. Moreover, with the right facilities, Longmont could become a key hub in the NHPA circuit, attracting enthusiasts from around the state and boosting our local economy through increased tourism and sporting events.

Installing an NHPA facility at Hover Acres Park would require initial funding, but the long-term benefits far outweigh the costs. The community and city officials can collaborate to explore funding options, such as grants, partnerships, and public-private initiatives. Additionally, the increased use of the park will enhance its value to Longmont's citizens, making it a vibrant center for outdoor activities.

Let us not allow the game to fade into obscurity. By supporting this petition, you are helping preserve a piece of Longmont’s cultural heritage and enriching our community's recreational life. I urge the City of Longmont and relevant stakeholders to prioritize this proposal and take action to ensure the installation of an NHPA facility at Hover Acres Park. Please sign the petition and join us in reviving and celebrating the sport of horseshoe pitching in Longmont, Colorado.
