Install more speed limit signs in underserved neighborhoods

The Issue

My niece was tragically killed by a speeding car in her neighborhood. The absence of speed limit signs or any "children at play" warnings in the area where she lived contributed to this senseless loss. This neighborhood is not just home to my niece, but to many families who love and cherish their children. At night, the streets are dimly lit, and during the day, visibility is further compromised by construction and limited parking. These conditions create a dangerous environment for pedestrians—especially young children who are playing outside or walking home from school.

The lack of proper signage in underserved, underrepresented, and marginalized neighborhoods significantly increases the risk of accidents and tragedies like the one that has struck my family. Studies show that in areas with visible and plentiful speed limit signs, traffic incidents dramatically decrease. Lives could be saved if the local authorities take action.

Kaliyah was a bright, well-mannered, sweet, and empathetic child. She was deeply loved by her peers and teachers. Anyone who had the privilege of meeting her could immediately feel her genuine spirit. Kaliyah had a way of bringing warmth and a smile to those around her—she was truly special. Her tragic and unexpected passing has left an immeasurable void in the lives of so many. Sadly, her story is not unique. Too many lives have been lost due to inadequate signage, poor lighting, and unsafe infrastructure in our neighborhoods. We cannot continue to accept or live under these conditions. No family, school, or community should have to endure such a loss because of preventable safety failures. It is my hope and prayer that through this heartbreaking tragedy, meaningful change will occur—so that all communities are seen, protected, and respected through improved safety measures, including proper lighting and sufficient signage.

We are urging city officials and the Department of Transportation to install more speed limit signs and "children at play" signs in these neighborhoods. Further, improving street lighting will address the added dangers that poor visibility at night imposes. These measures will send a clear message to drivers to slow down, respect the community's safety, and prevent more heartbreaking incidents.

By taking swift action, city officials can demonstrate their commitment to ensuring the safety of all families, regardless of their neighborhood. Your support can make a crucial difference. Sign this petition to advocate for safer streets and to honor the memory of my niece and protect other children in vulnerable communities.
