The Issue

As a trans man, navigating school environments can often be challenging and sometimes anxiety-inducing, particularly when it comes to something as essential as the use of restrooms. The Liberty Public Schools district currently lacks gender-neutral bathroom facilities, an omission that can be deeply distressing for transgender and non-binary students, who deserve the same comfort and dignity as their peers.

The presence of gender-neutral bathrooms is not merely a convenience; it is a necessity for those of us who do not fit neatly into traditional gender categories. For students like me, having access to at least one gender-neutral restroom would mean feeling safer and more at ease, reducing the discomfort and distress that often accompany the need to use gender-designated facilities.

Furthermore, studies have shown that gender-neutral bathrooms can contribute to a more inclusive school environment by acknowledging and validating diverse gender identities. According to GLSEN’s 2019 National School Climate Survey, over 60% of transgender students avoid school bathrooms due to feeling unsafe or uncomfortable. Creating accessible spaces like gender-neutral restrooms can significantly alleviate this problem, ensuring that all students, regardless of their gender identity, can focus on their education without fear or distress.

Implementing gender-neutral bathrooms is not only a step towards inclusivity but also an actionable measure the Liberty Public Schools district can take to demonstrate its commitment to diversity and respect for all students. Other school districts across the United States, such as those in New York, California, and Washington, have successfully integrated gender-neutral bathrooms, setting a precedent that Liberty Public Schools can follow.

We urge the Liberty Public Schools district to acknowledge this pressing issue and take immediate action by installing at least one gender-neutral bathroom in each school. This change would symbolize a significant step forward in ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for all students. Please join us in advocating for this important change by signing this petition. Together, we can create a more inclusive and supportive educational experience for everyone.
